Several years ago I wanted to update my blog and create a whole website integrating a common theme. After doing a bit of research I came do a stunning conclusion: I have no idea what I am doing.

I had created a couple of websites from the ground up, but it was extremely labor intensive to accomplish the smallest task. I was using CSS and HTML, with Dreamweaver, and I learned quite a lot in a short amount of time due to necessity.

When it came to my site, I decided to ask for help. Okay, I decided to have someone else do it. A friend of mine does this sort of thing and is pretty darn good at it, so I turned to her and her expertise. She created the OnBeingMe theme, installed Wordpress, and a couple of site pages. It turned out really well and was a good representation of me at the time.

My needs have since changed and, while I know a heck of a lot more about PHP, CSS and HTML than I did, it would still be extremely labor intensive for me to go about creating my own theme.

Let’s face it. I don’t have a whole lot of time on my hands and am a sucker for instant gratification. I set out on a search for some ready made themes that I could just upload and activate. It’s difficult to find quality themes that can stand on their own right out of the box, and I am grateful for the hard work that designers put into creating some really good ones. One of the best things about maintaining my own website is being able to have everything exactly how I want it. Having an aesthetically pleasing, ready made theme is nice while I chip away at my own a little at a time.

The good ones are not easy to find though, so I wanted to share the nicer ones that I have come across lately. more…

Does Natal creep out anyone else or am I the only one? Without going into conspiracy theory overdrive, the applications of this technology are a bit frightening. Of course, if Microsoft has it, the military is already using it. :-)

Don’t know how this is going to turn out, but we’ll see how it goes! If you are seeing gibberish, bear with me.

I’ve recently received several invitations to sign up for Facebook and people are having a hard time understanding why I will not use it. Most people do not take the time to read the privacy notice and/or the terms that are listed on the websites they sign up for. So read the following and you’ll probably get it.

Facebook Terms of Use:
(excerpt) “Proprietary Rights in Site Content; Limited License

All content on the Site and available through the Service, including designs, text, graphics, pictures, video, information, applications, software, music, sound and other files, and their selection and arrangement (the “Site Content”), are the proprietary property of the Company, its users or its licensors with all rights reserved….”

What does this mean? Well, they tell us in another paragraph:
(excerpt) “When you post User Content to the Site, you authorize and direct us to make such copies thereof as we deem necessary in order to facilitate the posting and storage of the User Content on the Site. By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing. You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content. Facebook does not assert any ownership over your User Content; rather, as between us and you, subject to the rights granted to us in these Terms, you retain full ownership of all of your User Content and any intellectual property rights or other proprietary rights associated with your User Content…”

Yeah….no. A bit too free with the use of things posted on their site. And for those wondering, no…MySpace does not do the same:

6. Proprietary Rights in Content on MySpace.

6.1 MySpace does not claim any ownership rights in the text, files, images, photos, video, sounds, musical works, works of authorship, applications, or any other materials (collectively, “Content”) that you post on or through the MySpace Services. After posting your Content to the MySpace Services, you continue to retain any such rights that you may have in your Content, subject to the limited license herein. By displaying or publishing (”posting”) any Content on or through the MySpace Services, you hereby grant to MySpace a limited license to use, modify, delete from, add to, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce, and distribute such Content solely on or through the MySpace Services, including without limitation distributing part or all of the MySpace Website in any media formats and through any media channels, except Content marked “private” will not be distributed outside the MySpace Website. This limited license does not grant MySpace the right to sell or otherwise distribute your Content outside of the MySpace Services. After you remove your Content from the MySpace Website we will cease distribution as soon as practicable, and at such time when distribution ceases, the license will terminate. If after we have distributed your Content outside the MySpace Website you change the Content’s privacy setting to “private,” we will cease distribution of such “private” Content outside the MySpace Website as soon as practicable after you make the change.

Just FYI.

Well, it’s official. I am a dumbass.

Changed over to a new computer. Backed up all of my email. Except my inbox. /sigh

So. If you’ve sent me an email recently that was important, please send it again. Thank you and goodnight.

Okie dokie. I do believe that I have fixed the problem with the Post Restrictions plugin. No, it wasn’t my infinite brilliance that fixed the coding issue or whatever it was. I simply deleted the plugin and went back to the trusty (and updated) Post Levels plugin. It’s just peachy ducky. *sigh* I really should try and update my brain with this PHP stuff. I was on a roll, thinking I was getting it when suddenly it went bye bye like shit through a goose. Ah, well. I guess my talents lie elsewhere.

Just a quick FYI. You may or may not be confronted with an error message when accessing the blog from IE or Firefox. I do get the error, I’m guessing because I’m not automatically logged in with those browsers. I’m doing just fine with Safari, though.

I’m aware that the error is related to my Post_Restrictions plugin and will be working to fix it. Hold tight and I’ll post if I figure it out.

Alrighty. I’ve just finished the upgrade of my WordPress program and it looks like all is well. So far anyway. I did want to post about a new plugin I came across. The new version of WordPress has a new thing called ‘Roles’ instead of user levels. These can be manipulated using the Role Manager pluging. I’ve installed and activated it and it’s pretty snazzy for those of us who aren’t so savvy with tweaking plugins.

As always, let me know if you have any problems with the new setup. Not that I can really fix anything much, but it’s good to know anyway.

Hey, I’ve been so out of the loop of things that I didn’t even realize that the new WordPress v2.0.1 is out. *sigh* Gotta get into the groove, man!

I should be upgrading to the new version sometime tomorrow. If anyone is still reading my incoherent, intermittent babble and you happen to come back to find a screwy page where this blog used to be, rest assured that it should only take a few minutes (knowing me, 537,467,032) to get the blog back up and running.

What prompted me to do the update is the fact that I went and messed up my private post plugin a while back and didn’t keep notes where I could find them. Now, of course, I really need this pluging working correctly so I’m updating. Grr… Ah well, I’m a little rusty on the whole computer thing now that I have been using a Mac for the last couple of years and it works so perfectly. Blue screen of death? What the heck is that? hee hee….!

Wish me luck. :-/

Oops, I did it again.
I played with my email, screwed everything up.
Oh baby, baby
Oops, I play it so smart
But I’m only human
I’m not that bright sometimes.

:-) So, if you have sent me an email in the last 3 weeks or so and you would really like a response, please send it again. Thank you for playing and have a nice day!

I warned you awhile ago that this site was undergoing a redesign and here it is. All of the posts that are here as of now are just re-posted from the previous blog. I have been unsucessful in my search for a way to import from phpbb to Wordpress. I will continue looking and when (if) I find a way, everything will be imported and the old blog will be history! The other blog has been disabled for anything beyond viewing. All new comments should be directed here, as well.

Check back often because I will be updating frequently with essays, research and general knowledge that you know you can’t live without.
You know, it’s kinda funny…..I haven’t advertised this site anywhere, except for 1 day on my Yahoo profile. I decided to remove the link and it hasn’t been posted anywhere since. The funny thing is that I have a huge amount of traffic. Well, it’s a lot to me and that’s not counting those of you who check the site a couple of times a day.

I am truly amazed that there are so many people who think I’m writing something worth reading. Or at least worth laughing about. :-)
