Today I decided to get off my butt and make something. I think most people who know me know that I am happiest when I am in the Lab creating something. Anything!

I’ve noticed that here in the midwest my skin tends to dry out more than I am used to and I require the use of a more intense lotion. But I really dislike thick, heavy, greasy creams and won’t suffer through them even if they work beautifully.

All of my creations are formulated and handmade from the ground up. I start with an idea of what kind of product I want and what I want it to do. Then I will move into formulation and create my product based on the individual oils and other ingredients that accomplish my goal. When it comes to scent, I first look for essential oils that do a particular job and then create a blend that smells a certain way based on the type of product, its color, the season, how the product is supposed to make you feel, etc.

I’m sure that this recipe is not mine because I cannot remember creating it and my formulations are either much larger or smaller for testing. I have personally used it many times and really wish I could remember where I got it and when I wrote it down. If anyone has come across it, please let me know so that I can give proper credit.

This whipped butter is extremely easy to make and does not incorporate water so there is no need for a preservative if you are not making it for clients. You will want to add an antioxidant though, to keep the oils from turning rancid. This is the purpose of the vitamin E so don’t leave it out unless you are going to substitute another antioxidant!

Also, I know there will be some people out there reading who will feel a bit cheated that I didn’t specify the butters and oils to use. It’s really okay! This is where your own creativity comes into play. You might say, I only have shea butter, can I use that? Or, I only have 1.5 ounces of aloe butter but I have 2.5 of cocoa butter, is that okay? YES! Use one butter and one oil, use a mixture of different ones, it’s all up to you. There are many people out there who purchase bases from suppliers, stir in a scent and repackage it, but I like to have control over every aspect of my products from scent to texture to benefits. Use a therapeutic essential oil blend as a scent to help with eczema. Use aloe butter to help with sunburn. Use lavender to calm you or grapefruit to energize after a morning shower. Use rosehip seed oil for mature skin, olive for sensitive skin or if it’s what you have on hand. Safflower, peanut, wheat germ, sweet almond, it’s all up to you!

“The individual is not the sum of his common impressions but of his unusual ones. Thus familiar mysteries are created in us which are expressed in rare symbols. It is near water and its flowers that I have best understood that reverie is an ever-emanating universe, a fragrant breath that issues from things through the dreamer.”

~Gaston Bachelard, Water and Dreams

It was this quote that has brought me here to discuss what can only be referred to as a perversion of the Arts. Art, as I understand it, is highly subjective. It is reminiscent of the old adage ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ There are as many opinions as to what constitutes ‘Art’ as there are people alive in the world and they are all correct in their understanding. Classically speaking, art consisted of painting, sculpting, poetry and song, among a few other minor trades. I’ve gotten pretty good at drawing, all manners of sewing including needlepoint and knitting, prose and painting, although I would not consider myself an artist at any of them. Yes, I can hold my own against every other person who has a passing interest in these things but an artist? Not so much. That said, I will not be speaking of these things because I do not have the working knowledge to do so. I do, however, have more than a smidge of talent in the art of scent and so it happens that this is where I will be focusing my argument.

I once read of an experiment in which two perfumers were given the task of creating an essence around a single scent. Now keep in mind one of these was a professional, commercial perfumer working in a big ‘house’ in the perfume industry. The other was not a casual perfumer in the least, but not employed in the same line of work and they are not central to the point here anyway. The single essence is not what is to note here but the process. The commercial perfumer took a bit of time thinking and considering the single scent with which to center his universe. He then proceeded to ‘compute’ his perfume in his head. 5ml of this….3ml of that….6ml of the other…and whatnot. This formula no doubt recalled charts, diagrams and classifications whereupon he remembered what essences typically married well with others and being careful to include 4 base chords, 4 middle chords and 4 top chords, possibly a little more or less. Now remember, this man is a professional and probably makes more money in a year than you or I will see in a lifetime.

Bringing this perspective into another area, we have the commercialization of religion and its accoutrements. I am fortunate enough to personally know more than 5 people who are running their own establishments. These range from a bookstore to a tattoo parlor to…well, the others are mostly Pagan oriented shops. While each owner has their own distinct personality, the bookstore is the same as all of the others, the tattoo parlor (with the exception of quality of service) is the same as the others, the Pagan oriented shops are the same as all of the others. Every person who comes across a little bit of money wants to open their own shop for whatever reason. Why are they all the same? Because they have all conformed to what they think the general public wants without any thought to what they, as individuals, want. Or maybe they do so with full knowledge and money is the leading cause. Whatever the case may be, what is missing is the Art.

I have heard from many different people that my essence blends are more effective in ritual and magick than others that are made and sold in the various shops in this area, and beyond. And they are, I should know because I have fully tested and compared each one to my limits before they are marketed and sold. Sometimes I will go on a binge of sorts and create two or three blends in a week and sometimes I will not create for months. Even during my highly creative moments, there is always a process by which additions are made or proportions adjusted after the initial creation.

In order to create, I have to set the mood. Many times this involves changes in music and lighting, other times I am inspired by reading poetry or a highly descriptive work. Other times inspiration comes from a movie or an argument with my husband. Still other, the mood is already in place when I wake in the morning, having spent some time in lucid dreaming. I have even woken up in the middle of the night with a memory or feeling that I absolutely must begin to capture in scent before I can retire once again.

Once the mood is set and I have a particular feeling ready to be evoked, I turn to my oils and slowly begin to remember each scent, one by one. I tend to think of essences in terms of personalities. Some are gentle and silently coax you to leave everything behind you and run away with the wind. Others are immediately beautiful but fade with no depth or lasting impression. There are a few that are high and bright, where you can’t help but giggle with their cheerfulness. Others still must be seduced into submission. Then there are those who must be encouraged to shine amidst other, more recognizable essences, where one precious drop stands between perfection and destruction of the relationship so carefully nurtured. There are scents that are beautiful on their own, such as tuberose, musk and patchouli. Each must be allowed to shine in their own place, in their own time.

At the risk of sounding like a snob, you are not creating anything special or mystical when you mix 4 oils together and appreciate the resulting scent. Just as our emotions are complex, so are the essences inspired by them. My simplest blend contains 9 different scents. My most complex, no less than 15. This is why no one can duplicate my blends and why they smell like nothing else. Smell one, the most practiced nose will not be able to discern the ingredients.

It seems like everyone has decided to become all knowing. Why fully learn an art when you can learn just enough to get by and make some cash? Learn the first five minutes and then move on to the next and call yourself a master. How many mediums do you know who cannot also read Tarot? And how many Tarot readers do you know who do not also offer Reiki? How many Reiki ‘Masters’ do you know who do not also offer spiritual counseling or Life Coaching? Classic cases of Jack of all trades, master of none.

You know the old saying, “Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it’s raining”? Well, don’t rip of the head of a doll, stuff roses down it’s neck and call it a ‘vahz.’

Well, kindasorta.

Finally, I have my business license AKA Business Tax Certificate (because California has to take the fun out of everything), my Fictitious Business Name Statement and, last but not least, my seller’s permit. Yay! Go Me! I am official and all legal-like. This is just the neatest thing, the greatest feeling in the world! Yes, everyone at the various offices was laughing at me and my excitement. I know that they process these things about 50 times a day but I don’t. I only have the one and this is it! So I’m entitled to be excited, I think. :-)

Today, however, was a bit rough. So, awhile back I was trying to get my teeny head around Filemaker Pro to set up this nifty database doing all sorts of things I have crawling around in my melon. Nope, not gonna happen. My brain just doesn’t work well with databases. So I talked to Miss Computer Goddess and she mentioned that she was trying to do the same thing and that it may be easier to use a nifty wiki. Since I’m extremely stubborn I spend a good deal of time trying to make my brain comprehend the aforementioned evil Filemaker to no avail. So I found a couple of wiki things that looked like what i wanted, picked one and commenced the install.

Can you guess what’s coming next? If you know me at all, you know that it was supposed to be a very simple thing that was really straightforward but instead took me all day, a pack of smokes and 4 liters of Pepsi to figure out.

TIP: Don’t use TextEdit to make a .htaccess file when you don’t know what the hell you are doing. I will tell you what will happen to save you the time.

You will find out that your host uses PHP4 by default and you have to make Apache use PHP5 because the wiki will require only the best and nothing less. Then you will try some dumbass idea you’ve spent 2 hours looking for on the internet and just do a global extension change, only to find out that all of the source code that says ‘.php’ needs to be changed as well. So you will go and do that only to find out that it doesn’t work and was a stupid idea posted by morons who don’t know any more than you do.

So you will then call your host and ask them what to do. They will tell you to create a .htaccess file using a regular, simple text editing program and only put a tiny line of code in there to make Apache do what you want it to do. So you will do that and put it into your root folder (because they didn’t tell you any different and you have no idea) and then your whole site won’t work because the other parts of your site run on PHP4 and now you’re forcing everything to try and use PHP5 and you’ll spend another 2 hours finding that out. Then you will deduce that you should just put the .htaccess file in your wiki folder and that should fix everything.

Except it won’t. And you won’t be able to figure out why. So you’ll go into the kitchen, breathing heavy, cleaning everything in sight so that you can think clearly about things that aren’t in your brain to find in the first place. Then you’ll come back to the computer and read and re-read the .htaccess file and searching the internet for someone, ANYONE, who has the same problem and can’t figure it out. After 1.5 hours of searching you will realize that you are the only dumbass in the world with this problem. Out of all the complete idiots out there in the world, YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE with this problem. Now doesn’t that make you feel all warm and fuzzy? Yeah….no.

Finally, after pulling your hair out in chunks and realizing you missed your midday nipple soak, you will call your host, again, and tell them that you are an idiot and could they please help you. They will say….’What’s a wiki?’

So you will explain, which ends up sounding like you are a completely insane Hawaiian, and off they go to look at your .htaccess file. When they can’t find it you will feel a little smarter telling them where it is but it is short lived. They will find it and tell you that there is a bunch of ‘blah blah blah’ in there that shouldn’t be in there but is added because TextEdit is a bigger crackhead than you are. You will remove the gobbledeegook and save it to the server.

Voila! Instant Wiki!

There. That should save you a lot of time. Now for the solution. Create your .htaccess file using a ’simple’ text editing program. Add the following line, without the brackets: [ AddType x-mapp-php5 .php ] and you may need to name the file “.htaccess” to make your system happy. Upload the file to your server in the directory where it will apply. Once it’s uploaded, rename it simply .htaccess and then OPEN IT to make sure there is no crap, just the proper code. Then you’re good to go.
Now I’m too tired to play with it, I just wanna go die for 8 hours or so. G’night! *snore*

I know I’m going to add to this as I think of more so bear with me as this post is a work in progress. Actually, scratch that. It’s going to be a whole page on another part of my site. Yep, that’s how important it is.
For now, what makes a witch a witch? Okay, you probably have that figured out by now. But what makes one ‘advanced?’ Is it the outdated notion that one must be a High Priest/ess? Is it the adoration of many disciples or followers? Is it the experience of leading a coven or other group? Is it spending a certain amount of ‘time in rank’ or having a piece of paper telling one and all that you are ‘qualified?’ Want my opinion? Well, you’re going to get it anyway because that is why you’re here. Right? :-)

Being advanced is not knowing the elements inside and out. It is not knowing which way to walk in circle. It is not knowing the myths of every God and Goddess ever thought of. It is not knowing divination, spellwork, herbs, crystals and minerals. It is not all of the knowledge contained in the various ‘how-to’ books littering the shelves in your local bookstore.

Being advanced is a state of mind. It is knowing all of the above but, more importantly, applying that knowledge with wisdom. It is not only standing between the worlds in ritual but in your daily life. It is the ability to lead and share your knowledge and wisdom from within the shadows. It is not needing to prove yourself and argue about the correct use of a black candle or how our way is the one true way.

Oh, the things I could say. Oh, the time I would need! Soon….

Body lotions, creams and oils. All therapeutic in some form. It’s a pretty common home based business, right? All natural products, getting away from chemicals because people are realizing the effects. Okay, lets explore this a bit. Define natural, first. I immediately think “coming from nature.” Do you? Most companies do not, including those well meaning home based businesses.
