I am usually pretty skeptical when it comes to those ‘As Seen On TV’ products. I look at them and ask myself how they could possibly work or see that they are a huge waste of money, whereas the DH wants every one of them because the 2 minute spot has convinced him that he can’t live without them. Lo and behold, sometimes the DH is right! I’ve branched out a bit since my first experience in 1999 and have tried a few of the other TV products with varying results.
I have seen the BumpIt advertised on television for awhile now and had wanted to try it.
My hair is very flat and it takes a lot of curling/product/teasing to make it have anything that resembles volume. In order to achieve the ‘bump’ I have to do some serious backcombing AND curling, using a ton of product along the way. All of that plus heavy hairspray to keep the volume and my hair ends up feeling like straw, which is why I so often just pull my hair back into a pony or up with a clip.
The BumpIt is advertised as working on all hair types, including very fine hair so that was one step closer to my wanting to buy it. The website also includes a gallery showing a good selection of hairstyles using the accessory. Whether these particular women are styled using it, or it is just advertising hype, I can’t honestly say. But I can say that these styles are most definitely possible with this handy tool. There is also a page of testimonials, although you never know if they are paid or not.
I always have an issue paying for shipping unless I absolutely cannot get what I want locally. I knew that if I waited long enough it would be available in a store close by. Lucky for me I was perusing Walgreens and found the BumpIt for only $9.99.
The item at Walgreens is a pared down version of the item available online, of course, but it includes 3 sizes, a comb and a decent instructional booklet. The sizes are small, medium and large and are appropriate for bangs/ponies, everyday and dressy, respectively. It is also available in different colors based on your own hair color. There is brunette/auburn, black, light blonde and medium/dark blonde.
I expected to have to do a good amount of work and fudging to cover the BumpIt but was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to use. The hardest part was figuring out exactly where I needed to place it. There is still a bit of backcombing and spraying because my hair is extremely fine, but I used it on clean, conditioned dry hair with no trouble.
You basically part your hair into a 2 inch section, brush it straight up and backcomb about 3 inches. Then you place the BumpIt just behind the part, place your hair over it and it will naturally fan out into place. Ideally, you want to place the regular BumpIt aligned towards the back and in line above your ears. Spray lightly with hairspray and then smooth out the top. You don’t want to press it down, just gently smooth it so you don’t have the ‘ratted’ look. Lightly spray again to keep in place, adjusting the rest of your hair around the face or into an up do. That’s it! I didn’t have anyone handy to take a decent pic, but it’s just a tiny bump on the crown with the rest pulled back into a twist, and it took all of 5 minutes or less.
There are several videos on YouTube as well, to give you an idea of how easy it is to use. Here are a couple to get you started:

HSN BumpIts spot
I put mine in at about 8 this morning and it is now after 9pm, not having moved an inch. I have not had to adjust, redo, re-spray or anything all day and it has stayed put. There is a row of teeth around the whole thing but I don’t feel them on my scalp and it is so lightweight that I don’t even notice that I have anything in. You cannot see that I have something in, even with my fine hair.
All in all, this was a very good purchase and I can see using it a lot. I don’t recommend hitting the top of your head on the cupboard though, it does hurt.
